ProBioDev is a community of stakeholders committed to biodiversity. The program brings together funding, partnerships, expertise and advocacy within a single framework, in order to sustainably strengthen the impact of civil society organisations in partner countries.

An innovative mechanism

Biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate. Faced with this urgency, the most powerful responses are often those that come from the field: projects led by civil society organisations (CSOs), close to local realities, inventive and resilient.

But for these initiatives to truly make a difference, they need to be able to rely on solid alliances, networks, suitable funding, strengthened skills… and a collective voice capable of influencing public policy. ProBioDev, a program led by the IUCN French Committee, stems from this conviction.

Ambitious goals, in the service of biodiversity

Partnerships to act locally

ProBioDev supports partnerships between French civil society organisations and those from countries in the Global South, in order to fund and implement field projects for biodiversity. These collaborations help to anchor actions in local realities while fostering the sharing of experience and skills bilaterally.

A network of experts to draw on

Led by the French Committee of the IUCN, the group brings together organisations working on biodiversity issues in developing countries. It is a space for exchanges, reflection and capitalisation that allows members to share knowledge, identify common issues, and nourish collective positions.

A sustainable strengthening of CSO resilience

Beyond funding projects, ProBioDev supports partner organisations in strengthening their capacities, in order to consolidate their structure, governance and capacity to act. The goal is to support the emergence of strong, sustainable actors capable of acting on and influencing conservation dynamics in their territories.

ProBioDev builds on the momentum started with the SoBioDev program, which aimed to facilitate civil society organisations’ access to biodiversity funding and to strengthen their capacity to act.

Since 2024, ProBioDev has sought to demonstrate that ecological impact gains depth when it simultaneously relies on balanced partnerships between CSOs, a dynamic network that connects stakeholders and shares knowledge (through the Developing Countries and Biodiversity working group), collective expertise fed by field realities, and a common voice capable of influencing public policy.

ProBioDev thus seeks to create an ecosystem that amplifies CSOs’ power to act and durably transforms practices. This integrated approach — where cooperation, learning and influence reinforce one another — helps contribute to better-preserved nature, serving territories, human communities and the rest of the living world.

The impact

ProBioDev’s ambition is to support partnerships capable of generating a tangible and lasting impact on biodiversity and the territories concerned. Since 2024, projects supported by ProBioDev have resulted in:

Hectares of forests and mangroves restored, and 57 ha currently being rehabilitated
0
People made aware of protecting their environment
0
Sustainable economic sectors created or supported
0
Ecological monitoring or inventories carried out
0
Governance structures and management tools created or strengthened
0
Hectares of conservation areas mapped participatorily
0

Supported projects

Since 2024, 11 projects have been supported in 10 different countries, for a total amount of €1.9 million.

The current phase of the program runs until the end of 2026.

Words from our partners

ProBioDev and the Developing Countries and Biodiversity working group

The Developing Countries and Biodiversity working group was behind the reasoning that led to the creation of the ProBioDev program.

Led by the IUCN French Committee, this working group brings together organisations working on biodiversity issues in developing countries. It is a space for exchanges, reflection and capitalisation that allows members to share knowledge, identify common issues, and nourish collective positions.
